Data Center Design
Energy Efficiency Concepts and Audits in Data Centers
Largely invisible costs of providing power, cooling, safety and security environment for Data Centers are increasing far faster than the performance gained from new servers. Recent UPTIME Institute white papers show evidences that energy use is growing at a rate that is even faster than previously predicted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Despite energy efficiency measures in Data Centers, energy consumption is increasing at faster rates than anticipated. The UPTIME Institute highlights two most important implications on energy saving practices, as pointed out by most of respondents in a survey. First, the use of these practices is in its infancy and need to be deployed with much greater consistency and sophistication. Second, there is a dawning recognition that curbing energy consumption in the Data Center is a must.

Anticipating the thrust upon green and efficient energy in Data Centers, the Schnabel DC Consultants India office has started its initiatives in associating with reputed energy management professionals and institutions. To refer a few of them:

1. SCHNABEL DC Consultants India Private Limited has been selected as an organization member in the Indian Association of Energy Management Professionals.
2. SCHNABEL DC Consultants India Private Limited is chairing the Expert Group on Energy Efficient Data Centers within the Indian Association of Energy Management Professionals.
3. SCHNABEL DC Consultants India Private Limited has started engaging with The Energy and Resources Institute, Bangalore on energy audits, LEED and management related topics.
4. SCHNABEL DC Consultants India Private Limited is a registered member with the UPTIME Institute.

Motivation
The Energy Conservation Act, 2001 has come into force with effect from March 01, 2002. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has also been established by the Government of India with effect from the same date. The EC (Energy Conservation) Act 2001 has been in force since March 2002, indicating that energy conservation is a high priority area for the Government of India. Under the mandate of the EC Act, BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) is the nodal agency for implementation of a policy programme and to implement various activities contained in the EC bill to provide momentum to energy efficiency actions in the country. The mission of BEE is to institutionalize energy efficiency services, enable delivery mechanisms in the country and provide leadership to the key players involved in the energy conservation movement. The primary goal of the Bureau is to reduce energy intensity in the economy.

Implementation Measures
Implementation of energy efficiency measures and best practices can not only save the energy but also cost. The UPTIME Institute has three new metrics to monitor upfront and after purchase costs to maximize IT returns on investments.

1. DC-EEP
2. IT PEW
3. SI EER

Data Center Energy Efficiency and Productivity (DC-EEP) Index
DC-EEP index is composite result at the Data Center level. It depends upon two independent, but interrelated ratios. First, IT Productivity per Embedded Watt (IT-PEW). Second, Site Infrastructure Energy Efficiency Ratio (SI EER). The first index is the responsibility of IT( it is the result of data architecture and the reliability decisions on IT) and the second index is the responsibility of Facilities( it is the factor of determination of energy efficiency towards power and cooling).

Comprehensive energy efficiency measures and practices in Data Centers can be categorised into following thrust areas:
- Energy (thermal and electrical)
- Water
- Power quality
- Electrical safety
Supporting instrumentation plays a key role in energy audits and analysis. Reliable analyses require a few important, necessary energy monitoring instruments and equipments under two classifications,
a) Thermal instruments
b) Electrical instruments

Following are the list of instruments popularly used in energy audits and efficiency analysis,
