As trees fall costs rise

Saving energy in Data Centers
At an on-site meeting, the head of a Data Center told us the following remarkable story: For some years he had been responsible for the running of a Data Center of about 150m. One day, a tree which stood immediately in front of the Data Center was felled. The next year he was interested to discover that the cooling bill for the Data Center had risen by about 2000 Euros. You see, that tree had provided shade for the heat exchangers which meant that they could work more efficiently than if they had been exposed to direct sunlight. Although this seems perfectly logical, if we are honest it was never really taken into consideration when the heat exchangers were installed.

This experience shows how much potential there is for energy conservation in Data Centers. Good engineering common sense can quickly lead to further savings strategies. In order to put these into practice however, all those concerned need to develop a strong sense of awareness and sensibility for the problem. This challenge needs to be taken seriously by everyone, including the managing director, those responsible for IT as well as the Data Center facility manager.

Killer- phrases like I need an ambient temperature of 21C or Im delivering air at 16C through the raised floor, what else should I do? need to be scrutinized carefully. Such paradigms are no longer appropriate it isnt even clear where they originate. One sometimes has the feeling that good, solid, engineering know-how flies out of the window in the face of pragmatic rules of thumb on Data Center planning from the American-run IT industry. And yet no-one questions these rules, or thinks to adapt them to fit our weather conditions, technological alternatives and our better understanding of energy conservation. At the last Data Center Dynamics Conference in London, one German cooled cabinet manufacturer rubbed his eyes in amazement at the developments which were being hailed as new, energy-saving accomplishments he had been making these for years!

This lack of climate, heating and ventilation know-how is being sorely felt in the sector and means quite simply that energy is being wasted. People do not often stop to consider what the optimal operating conditions for cooling systems might be, what influence tight relative humidity limits can have on energy consumption and which positive or negative effects temperature difference and changes in air volume flow can have on efficiency. Even simply knowing about such things and acting on them to improve operations can start bringing in a return on the brain-investment within just a few days.

An energy-saving rule-of-thumb which is easy to remember is: set temperatures high, optimize air ducts and to set humidity limits where (permissibly) possible. When doing this it is unwise to blindly follow the IT equipment nameplates, for international studies by Ashrae for example - have shown that the theoretical capacity ratings are never reached by a long way and the limit values quoted come with very generous safety margins. And whats more, having a climate/cooling regimen by no means suggests that the systems actually function accordingly in practice. In almost every case, the systems work completely differently on site because under actual operating conditions, they cannot handle anything like the theoretical nameplate load. After only a few weeks, adjustments are made which cause major changes to airflow and flow balancing. Regular checks and re-adjustments can also help save a lot of energy and thus money. And finally, there are lots of ways to generate considerable savings using structural and technical modifications. In this case, simple economic feasibility studies (investment costs against energy cost savings per year) show how quickly such measures can pay off.
